M&M News Update
Hope everyone is doing well. It is so strange to be here at school without you and all your energy and stories you like to share.
We know that class cancellations are unusual and challenging events. During this short period before spring break, we encourage families to maintain a balanced and consistent routine for children; including regular sleeping and eating times, breaks for activity and outdoor time, and healthy boundaries on screen time.
During these next few days, we don’t want to overwhelm students and families with programming expectations or offerings while they are adjusting to the cancellation of classes and managing childcare needs. After Spring Break, more curricular information will be made available. It is important that consistent messaging and resources are offered to students across the CBE. Below is a link that the CBE has created with activity suggestions:
Please take family time during the break. Teachers will also be taking family time, and focusing on their health. Also note, teachers will not be responding to emails over the next week. A long term plan for learning will be rolled out after the break as per CBE directives.
If you would like material regarding Covid-19, we have attached a social story for children and a parent resource with suggestions on how to talk to your child.
Have a wonderful Spring Break! Enjoy time outside and with your family.

Today we reviewed the math strategies we had learned this week. You can have me show you how to use these strategies to solve double digit addition equations.
We also had a chance to teacher our kindergarten buddies a new math game called shape fill. Ask me how to play and how we helped our buddies.
In writing we worked on editing our 1st draft and giving ourselves feedback and our peers feedback.

Today in writing we worked on writing a topic sentence and ending sentence. We thought about the what and where for our topic sentence and the why job, transportation or shelter are important. Ask me about my topic and ending sentence.
In math we began reviewing the math strategies that we can use to help us solve math problems. Today we focused on using base ten blocks. You can practice this with me at home by adding two double digit numbers together such as 64+73=___. Have me show you how I could draw base ten blocks to solve this problem.
In science we began conducted an experiment on insulation. First we made our hypothesis. Then we covered cups in different types of materials and left then to see whether the hot water would get colder and whether the freezie would melt. Ask me about which material we discovered was the best insulator.

I'm bringing a math problem solving sheet home. This is an example of what we've been working on.
What did we do in Grade 2 today:
- We worked on increasing patterns. Looking carefully at the number of items used to build each step can help you find the rule and predict.
- We reviewed reading strategies during our Morning Message while reading a Robert Munch book
- We chose a topic we have been learning about and created an idea web. We will be using this web to write an article.
- We had a chance to read our new library books during literacy time
- We went to Music
- We learned about some of the industries and jobs from the East Coast and the Arctic
