Today in Grade 2

We are working on counting.  This morning we practiced making groups of ten to help us count.  

 We then played a game called Shake and Spill.  One person had to record the red counters and the other the white.  You can also practice this game at home.  We are working hard to memorize our ten facts.  Please work with your child on this.
1 + 9 = 10     9 + 1 = 10
2 + 8 = 10     8 + 2 = 10
3 + 7 = 10     7 + 3 = 10
4 + 6 = 10     8 + 2 = 10
5 + 5 = 10

We did Book Shopping for the first time today.  We learned about different kinds of book and then got to choose new books for our book bins.  We picked 6 or 7 books - some quick reads, learning books and picture books.  Some of us also choose magazines to read.

In writing we worked on making sure our picture fit with our writing.  We talked about favourite foods and maybe not so favourite one and then had a chance to write about that.

In science we discovered that magnets have poles and that opposite poles attract and same poles repel.  Let me show you how I use my hands to remember the difference.

In the afternoon we read the book Roxaboxen.  In this book kids were using their imagination to build a community on a hill using rocks and boxes.  We talked about New Brighton and how that is our community.  Ask your parents if they remember some of their imagination games from when they were young.
